All of these increased sign up bonuses are really getting ridiculous! It must be the summer coming, and airlines know that this would be a great opportunity to get some additional sign ups before the traveling season.
The Increased Offer
Not too long ago, Southwest offered a Southwest companion pass, good until 2019, for signing up for the card. Besides the obvious of getting a companion pass, what was interesting about the offer was that it was available on every Southwest card. Here, we are also seeing an offer that is valid on every Southwest credit card.
Besides the Southwest companion pass sign up bonus, the typical sign up bonuses on the Southwest cards are about 40,000 points for spending $1,000 within the first 3 months. Now, we are seeing an increased offer of 60,000 points on every Southwest credit card for spending a total of $2,000 within the first 3 months. The only exception to this is the Southwest business card which offers $60,000 points for spending $3,000 within the first 3 months.
Something to Consider
While this is an increased offer, there’s something that may be pretty important to consider when it comes to signing up for the Southwest credit cards; the Southwest companion pass!
The Southwest companion pass is a system that allows the card holder to get an additional airline ticket for just the cost of fees and taxes. This is earned by getting a total of 110,000 Southwest points within the year. The best way to earn this is by the sign up bonuses of a personal + the business credit card. After earning the pass, you will get the companion pass for the rest of the calendar year, plus the next full 365 days.
Ideally, you would look to earn the pass sometime in the very early months of the year, and not towards the middle (May). This way you get a few extra months of the pass.
It’s nice to see that Southwest is offering an increased sign up bonus on its cards. If you are looking at earning the companion pass though, it may not be the best way to go. This is due the time limitation of the pass itself. Ideally if that was something for you, you would be looking at applying for these cards towards the end of the year to really maximize your time with the cards.
If you don’t care too much for the companion pass and just like flying Southwest, this is a good time to apply. Keep in mind that the card is issued by Chase, and therefore a 5/24 card.
What do you think of the increased sign up bonus on these cards? Is it worth applying for right now, or is it better to wait until the end of the year? Let us know below!
