Coronavirus has really played an interesting role in the way credit card companies are trying to incentivize us to use their cards. One of the most widely added temporary categories involves grocery shopping. However, if you don’t want to have to worry about that being a temporary category, and instead want a dedicated grocery card with no annual fee, this may be one of your best options!
The Offer
American Express is offering an unusual sign up bonus on this card. There is a traditional sign up bonus of $150 when spending $1,000 within the first 6 months. Additionally, you can earn 20% back on Amazon.com purchases on the card within the first 6 months, up to $200 back. When combined, that would be a total of $350 for the offer.
This offer is valid until October 7, 2020. Something to keep in mind is that it excludes gift cards.
Card Summary
The Blue Cash Everyday has a $0 annual fee. The reward categories are as follows:
- 3%: U.S. Supermarkets (up to $6,000 per year)
- 2%: U.S. gas stations and U.S. department stores
- 1%: Everywhere else
Final Thoughts
The first thing that jumped out at me with this offer is the timeframe. We are given 6 months instead of the usual 3. The second of course is that you’re going to be getting a discount on Amazon. In order to get the full $200 benefit, you’ll need to spend a total of $1,000 at Amazon.com. Some will have no issue doing this, for others, you’ll really have to plan purchases around this restriction. Still, try your absolute best not to just buy things off of Amazon because you have an offer, but rather, buy things you would have bought anyway.
If you think you’ll end up wanting more rewards on your groceries, consider the Blue Cash Preferred or the Gold Card from Amex instead. Both of those cards have an annual fee, so you’ll have to do the math to see if those annual fees are worth it for you. However, for the right person, it could really make a big difference.
What do you think about this offer? Will spending $1,000 at Amazon be difficult to do? Let us know down in the comment section below if you’d pick up this card or a different one for your grocery spend!
