Over the years, American Express has really tried pushing new features to entice people to grab their credit cards. While many credit card companies offer some form of Priority Pass membership or passes on their cards, American Express has pushed the envelope on the airport lounge experience. Their exclusive Centurion Lounges are some of the best mainstream airport lounge experience that you can get; so long as they aren’t crowded of course. But still, with coronavirus, every lounge has had to stay closed. But we’ve gotten some good news that hopefully push the industry in the opposite direction.
While there are no set date for opening up the majority of Centurion Lounges, there are some plans to open up a couple of them. Starting October 5th, both the Philadelphia and Seattle Centurion Lounges will open up.
Unfortunately, due to coronavirus, there will be some changes to the way the lounges work. There will be socially distanced seating, reduced capacity, increased cleaning, requirements to wear a face covering when entering the lounge, served food instead of the traditional buffet, and a few other changes.
Call it the first world problem that you’d like, but I’ve recently had to take a few different flights due to work. While the experience was pretty good, and I didn’t have to deal with anyone fighting airport staff due to not wanting to wear a mask, there was something missing from my typical airport experience. The lounges were missing! It felt so weird having to plan out my food and drinks based on not being able to go into any sort of lounge. Plus the horror of having to co-mingle with the other people I would be sharing the airplane with later was truly awful!
The joking aside, obviously things felt pretty different and the entire time I was sitting at the gate, I was just thinking about how much I missed the quiet lounges and those sweet free drinks. It’s exciting to see that American Express is slowly opening up the Centurion lounges. I’m hopeful that they can do so in a safe way, that can help pave the way for other lounges to open up.
