Amex Express Gold and Platinum Offering 20% Credit on Restaurant Spend

What do you do if you are really interested in the Gold or the Platinum card from American Express, but you don’t have anyone to refer you? Sure, the public offers are cool and all, but there is so much more value to be had through other avenues! What if you wanted similar value to the referral bonuses, but didn’t want to bother with actually getting referred? That’s where the new offers from Resy comes into play.

The Offers

Both the Gold and the Platinum card are offering a nice incentive to go along with their typical sign up bonus. The offers are as follows:

Gold
  • 35,000 points after spending $4,000 within the first 3 months
  • When making purchases at restaurants, get back 20% as a statement credit for the first 12 months (up to $250 back)
Platinum
  • 60,000 points after spending $5,000 within the first 3 months
  • When making purchases at restaurants, get back 20% as a statement credit for the first 12 months (up to $300 back)

In order to see either offer, you may have to look on Resy’s website.

Final Thoughts

I think this is a pretty unique offer. In order to maximize the credits, you’ll need to spend $1,250 on the Gold card and $1,500 on the Platinum card at restaurants within a 12 month span. I think the timeframe is very reasonable too! If we valued the Membership Reward points at 2 cents per point (TPG), that would mean the offers would be worth  $950 for the Gold card and $1,500 for the Platinum.

If you are able to generate higher point-only sign up bonuses, such as 50,000 points for the Gold, and 80,000 points for the Platinum card, you would technically be ahead by doing those offers instead. The main thing to note is that you’ll probably need a referral link at the minimum for the point only offers. If you plan on spending a lot at restaurants within the next year, then an offer that you may be able to generate yourself could get your pretty close as far as point value.

What do you think about these offers? Would you prefer the points or the statement credit? Let us know down in the comment section below.
