Have you been holding on to your Green card, hoping for Amex to do its rumored revamp? It’s been months since we’ve heard any news about this. Would you still hold on to the Green card if you were given an upgrade offer for the Gold card?
The Offer
Check your Green card’s Amex offers. Some people are being targeted for an upgrade that includes 40,000 MR points after spending $2,000 within the first 3 months. Note that this offer does not waive the $250 annual fee for the first year.
Gold Card Summary
The Gold Card comes with a $250 annual fee that is not waived in the first year. For that annual fee, here are the reward categories that the Gold card offers:
- 4x: Restaurants, U.S. supermarkets ($25,000 limit)
- 3x: flights booked directly with airlines
- 1x: everything else
- The Gold card also comes with some credits which include:
- $100 airline fee credit (upgrades, luggage fees, etc)
- $120 dining credit (split into $10 a month) at Grubhub, Seamless, Cheesecake Factory, Ruth’s Chris Steak House, Shack Shack, and boxed.com
Final Thoughts
If we are being honest, the Green card in its present state is pretty useless. It is an ok downgrade path for the Gold or Platinum card to keep any unused MR points + your credit history. Still, paying an annual fee on that card is a bit ridiculous, seeing that it doesn’t really offer any benefit to its users.
While we have heard on and off throughout the last year that American Express will be revamping the Green card, it frankly hasn’t happened yet. The Gold card on the other hand offers a ton of different benefits for its cardholders. Of course, with most benefits American Express offers, they are split up instead of just being a lump sum. Still, if you can use the benefits of the Gold card, it’s certainly worth it to have that card. This upgrade is available to those that have had the Gold card before and already received the bonus.
