When it comes to American Express, one of their most popular credit cards is the Gold card. With the revamp towards the end of 2018, it just offers a ton of benefits that a lot of people could find useful. There were a couple of complaints about the card though, one of them got addressed by adding in a 4x category for international restaurants. The other makes the $120 dining credit easier to use.
The Change
In its current form, the dining credit is $120, broken up into $10 a month increments. Instead of being a general credit for dining out, there are a select few places that would give you a credit. The list includes: Grubhub, Seamless, Cheesecake Factory, Ruth’s Chris Steak House and Shack Shack. If we are being honest, the list is pretty specific, and while I’m sure you could cycle through these places every so often, I’m sure you’d get tired of the same few places.
American Express has heard the complaints, of the limited selection of places where you can use the dining credit and has responded! You can use your $10 a month dining credit on boxed.com. The best way to describe boxed.com is an online version of a warehouse store, similar to Costco or Sam’s club.
Final Thoughts
Overall, I like that American Express is listening to the complaints from its base. It really sends the right message to consumers. Frankly, I don’t have a Gold card because I don’t go dining at any of these places, so the card would cost me an effective $150 extra every year. With the boxed.com credit, it is something that I may consider in the future.
The only thing to keep in mind with boxed.com is that you’ll need to order $49+ in order to qualify for free shipping. Still, they are pretty heavily partnered with American Express, to the point where Amex will give you offers at boxed.com pretty frequently.
