Apple Adds More Categories to Their Credit Card (6/30/20)

Well, well, well. It looks like Apple is keeping up with their initial promise of partnering with companies to make its credit card even more appealing.

The News

The Apple card has added another way its cardholders can earn 3% cashback! Any dollar spent at Exxon and Mobil using Apple Pay will now earn 3%!

The total list of places that earn 3% now include: Exxon, Mobil, Walgreen’s, Duane Reade, Uber/UberEATS, T-Mobile (In Store only), and Nike.

Final Thoughts

At this point I really don’t know if I’m justified in hating on Apple here. When they first announced the card, and said they were going to add more categories that would earn 3%, I really didn’t think much of it. It would have been really easy for them to just add a company or two and call it a day. Here they are, just about a year later, continuing to add to the collection. The complaint I’m going to make, as always, is that instead of just being a complete category, they are only partnering with individual companies, which doesn’t necessarily make for a competitive product if you don’t shop at those places.

The one thing I will say is that at least where I live, the ability to pay for gas at a pump with contactless is fairly limited. In fact, I actually try my best to buy gas only from places that actually allow me to pay with contactless (though you could trick it with Samsung Pay sometimes). Hopefully a move like this will encourage more and more pumps to add the ability to pay with NFC moving forward!

What do you think about this new addition to the Apple card? If you don’t have the Apple card already, would you consider one now? Let us know down in the comment section below.
