The Uber card has such a soft spot for me. When it first came out, I was seriously considering applying for it, because it was such a cashback card that rivaled even some of the best travel related cards – all without an annual fee! This was the cashback card to have if you did any traveling, and was often a card I would recommend to people that were into that kind of thing. Ultimately I didn’t apply for it, and instead went all in on the Chase Trifecta. With every piece that I write about the Uber card in the last year, the more I get upset. What is Barclays doing to this poor card?
If you navigate to Barclays’ list of credit cards, you’ll notice the Uber card is no longer listed. That’s because they are no longer taking new applications for this card! According to Barclays, this is a temporary change due to the market conditions. Unfortunately, there is no word on when and even if, the card will ever return
This kind of news breaks my heart, but if I’m honest, this is the exact reason that I never applied for the Uber card in the first place. Barclays also made similar moves with the Sallie Mae card. That card was an incredible value and one day they just decided to change the reward scheme, and eventually close it down.
When I first saw this card come out, I got similar vibes. I wanted to like this card so much, but I was scared that Barclays would do this. Once they made the change from cashback to Ubercash, I had a feeling the writing was on the wall. With the lack of travel demand due to coronavirus, it only makes sense for them to reevaluate this card, and see if they want to come up with something better, or if they even want to keep it at all. I wouldn’t be surprised if we never saw this being open again, but you never know.
