The Offer
The sign up bonus on the Cathay Pacific card is split up into two different tiers which are broken down below:
- 30,000 Miles: spend $2,000 within the first 3 months
- 20,000 more miles: spend an additional $6,000 within the first 6 months.
This works out to a total of 50,000 miles fr spending $8,000. The points are worth about 1.3 cents per point (TPG). Which puts this deal at value of about $650.
Credit Card Summary
The credit card comes with an annual fee of $95 which is not waived in the first year. For that annual fee, you earn rewards broken down as such:
- 2x: Cathay Pacific travel and in-flight purchases
- 1.5x: dining, purchases made outside of the United States
- 1x: everywhere else
Additionally, for the first year cardholders are given complimentary Green tier membership in the Marco Polo Club. The Green membership cost $100 to keep after the first year.
Final Thoughts
This is an interesting card to sa the least. If we are being honest, I don’t really think there is much value on the sign up bonus. Spending $8,000 to only get $650 seems pretty steep. Though it is certainly a good deal if you get value from that.
I also think it’s pretty interesting that you do get rewarded for using the card outside of the United States. It almost forces people to use the card when traveling if they don’t have anything better. Outside of that though, this card doesn’t offer much in the sense of priority boarding or a free checked bag which is a bit of a bummer for an airline credit card.
