When it comes to Discover, the majority of their cards offer a 5% rotating category. This means that every 3 months (or every quarter), you can earn 5% back in the category that is outlined. When it comes to Discover, they like to announce their categories ahead of time, and release the entire year at once. We now know what the categories are going to be for the entire year of 2020.
The Categories
- Q1: Grocery Stores, Walgreens, CVS
- Q2: Gas Stations, Uber & Lyft, Wholesale Clubs
- Q3: Restaurants and PayPal
- Q4: Amazon.Com, Walmart.com, Target.com
Final Thoughts
As with any other rotating category card, be absolutely sure to “activate” the offer before spending a dollar in the category. If you do not activate the card, you will not earn the 5%, and will only earn the usual 1%. Keep in mind too, that with Discover, there is a quarter maximum of $1500, after reaching that threshold, you will only earn 1% if you continue to spend in that category.
As far as the categories themselves, I think they’re all pretty well balanced. By only concern is Q4. In years past we have seen Amazon.com in Q4, but we would usually also see walmart and target in store. While it’s great that you can earn 5% online, I would prefer to see all spend at Walmart and Target, irrespective or it being online or in the store.
You can activate the offers by visiting here, logging into your account, or calling the number on the back of your credit card.
