A criticism of the credit card hobby that I’ve seen before is that it requires spending a ton of money to get a significant amount of points. I tend to disagree, the entire point of the credit card hobby (in my opinion anyway), is to get the most amount of value for each dollar that you spend. If you play it correctly, you are able to do save a ton of money and get a lot of value for your credit card spending.
This offer from Chase is exactly the same sort of concept. You’re going to be spending this money anyway, you may as well get some value for it, right?
Chase is offering 5x (or 5% depending on the card) anytime you use your card to pay bills which include: utilities, insurance, phone service, cable, and internet. In order to activate the offer, you must log into your account and activate the offer on the card you want to use.
This offer is showing up for the Sapphire cards, Freedom cards, and even the United cards. This offer is valid until September 30th, and there is a maximum amount of spending on up to $2,000. According to Chase, it could take up to 8 weeks before you receive the rewards.
When it comes to offers like these, how can you hate on them? They are a great way to earn points for purchases you’re making anyway, you may as well earn as many points as possible at the same time. It looks like this offer is available on a wide number of different cards including the core Chase cards and even some partner cards.
There is a maximum of $2,000, but I actually think that’s pretty generous. Most offers like this will cap out at a lower amount, usually around the $1,500 mark. If you have trouble spending that amount of money on bills, consider paying some of those bills in advance, like 6 months worth of insurance. Not only will you earn 5x with this offer, but you may also get a small incentive in the form of a discount if you do so anyway.
