Ever since Marriott split its credit card portfolio between Chase and American Express, it has been nothing but confusion. Should you stay on the personal lower end with Chase? Or are you looking for the high end of business card through American Express? This increased offer has made it just the more difficult for the average user.
The Marriott Bonvoy Boundless card (Chase, $95) is offering a 100,000 point sign up bonus after spending $5,000 within the first 3 months. That offer is currently better than the offer that the $450 Brilliant (Amex) card is running, at only 75,000 points. With this offer, the annual fee of $95 is not waived within the first year
For the $95 annual fee, you get the following reward categories
- 6x on Marriott spending
- 2x Everywhere else
Additionally, the card comes with an anniversary night to the tune of a 35,000 per night hotel room. The card gives you automatic Silver Elite status with the option of earning Gold if you can spend $35,000 within the card year.
So now, why is this offer confusing for the average person? There’s a few reasons. The first of which is that this card currently offers a sign up bonus that better than the $450 Marriott card. Second, while this card has always been on my list of cards to get, with the way Marriott have been changing its program, this card is becoming less and less valuable. The anniversary night is not tied to a category, it instead fluctuates its 35,000 points with the peak and off peak pricing. That being said, the Chase card does come with a downgrade path to a no annual fee Marriott card, which could prove to be pretty valuable if more negative changes are coming to the Marriott program
