Have you ever been in a situation where you really need to buy something, and you apply for a new card, but it takes almost two weeks to arrive? What if you’re at a hotel and you get asked if you’d like to apply for the card? Wouldn’t you like to know if you’ll be able to use that new card to pay for the room, being able to enjoy benefits such as status or free breakfast? We’ve got you covered with a complete list based on the issuer.
American Express is probably one of the best, if not the best when it comes to instant credit card numbers. Typically, they will issue instant credit card numbers for all of their cards. These numbers should be the same as the number on the physical card. The only two things to note here is that the 4 digit security code (CVV) and expiration date might be different, and the co-branded instant number cards may only be used at that place of business (ex. Hilton cards can only be used at Hilton properties).
While not released yet, from what we understand, the Apple card will offer an instant number that can be used with Apple Pay right after approval
Bank of America
Just about the only card that offers an instant number are the Alaska Airlines credit cards. Some users have reported that Bank of America will offer instant credit card for their core credit cards.
While Capital One doesn’t give you the instant card number directly, it may be possible to see the full details inside the Capital One app. However it’s much more likely that you will only see the last 4 digits of the card.
The only card that Chase offers instant numbers for is sometimes the Starbucks card. Before getting the physical card, you might be able to use it virtually to load up on the Starbucks app.
There is one card that Citi offers that you will always get an instant card number for, and that is the Costco card. For Costco, they’ll print out a temporary card that allows you to use your card right away.
Additionally, sometimes it’s possible to get instant card numbers for Citi’s American Airlines cards and the AT&T card.
There are a few cards in the Synchrony portfolio that offers instant card numbers. These include: ebates, and the two PayPal credit cards.
Instant card numbers are always useful when you’re in a situation where you need the card number right away, just as when you apply for a card while staying at a hotel. The instant card number gives you access to using the card right away, but also some of the perks that come with having the card such as status or reward earning.
Not having to wait up to two weeks for a new card can be really great feeling. It even helps give you a few extra days to spend on the sign up bonus, as the sign up bonus time period will start when the account is approved, and not when you receive the card.
I can see from the issuer point of few, it may not be beneficial to offer it, as either you have to randomize the temporary number, and keep track of different CVV for the purchases made before receiving the card. Plus there is the possibility of fraud occurring when giving out this information over the phone. However, when the issuer puts in the extra legwork to offer these instant card numbers, it is always appreciated!
