With the slowdown in travel that we are all experiencing, what do you do if you happen to have a ton of United points just sitting around, with an annual fee to pay on one of their credit cards? Obviously, United wants you to keep the card, but what if you don’t really have the money to pay for it? Before closing the card, you may want to consider this new option that United is giving out.
The News
If you happen to have one of Chase’s United card, you will now be given the option to redeem your United Miles at 1.5 cents per point if you are using the miles to redeem for the annual fee.
Final Thoughts
Now comes the fun part, is this deal worth it for you? Personally, I’m not too sure I would want to be holding a United Card right about now, but I also don’t live in a United hub. You’re going to have to do the math and see if the card still makes sense for you and your own use case.
If the card doesn’t make sense, you now have two options before just flat out closing. The best, and I think preferred option at this point would be calling in to see if you can get any sort of retention offer. If you can, that would be a much better way to go. Even if that offer requires some spending, at least you aren’t losing any points. If the point option sounds good to you too, then you can rest easy knowing that you didn’t actually spend any of your physical money where it may be put to better use somewhere else.
Is this perk worth doing in your opinion? Let us know if you’re going to take advantage of this, and which United card you have in the comment section below!
