What’s In My Wallet: March 2019

Cards in my Wallet

  1. Chase Sapphire Reserve
  2. Chase Ink Business Preferred
  3. Amex Blue Cash Preferred
  4. Discover IT NHL
  5. Chase Freedom

Strategy

  • Groceries: Discover IT NHL (5%)
  • Gas: Chase Freedom (5%)
  • Restaurants: Chase Sapphire Reserve (3x)
  • Travel: Chase Sapphire Reserve (3x)
  • Business Expenses: Chase Ink Business Preferred (1-3x)
  • Everything Else: Chase Sapphire Reserve (1x)

This month is the final month that I have a sign up bonus on the Chase Ink Preferred. Of course, the goal here is to meet that minimum spend. I’m not too far off now and it looks very likely that I’ll make it. In the meantime, for every other non business expense, I’m continuing the same sort of strategy.

Groceries will be put on the Discover IT NHL, and gas will be put on the Chase Freedom for 5% back on each. Then, we have restaurants and traveling at 3x if we put them on the Sapphire Reserve, and 1x for every other purchase.

Final Thoughts

While earning a sign up bonus is always exciting, I always get a little sad whenever I do reach one too. It’s like it marks the end of an era of using the same card for everything. This time was a little bit different though. Because the card I was using was a business card, it meant that I had to be very selective with my purchase. I would imagine that going forward, it will likely be the same after I meet the bonus. Next month will be exciting though, as I start again on one more sign up bonus.

What do you think about my current card setup? Would you change anything given the available cards I have? Let us know down in the comment section below.
